Commissioned by the World Monuments Fund, Kilburn Nightingale produced a Conservation Strategy and proposal for the long term conservation of the site in the Aïr Mountains in Niger which includes a sandstone outcrop with many images, including two remarkably fine engravings of life-size giraffes. The petroglyph dates from between 4-6,000 BC and is the largest known animal petroglyph in the world.
Our work, carried out in consultation with the local Touareg people, also entails the design of simple tourist facilities (a reception building and protective walkways) along with a sustainable management plan for the site as a whole.

Early in 2022, Ferdinand Saumarez-Smith from the Factum Foundation accompanied the Trust for African Rock Art to document the Dabous Giraffe in Niger.
It was recorded using close-range and drone-based photogrammetry from February 10th to 15th, 2022.
