The project aims to bring together high class tourist facilities and ecological concerns within a development agenda. The resort is designed to minimise the negative impact of tourism on the environment and to maximise benefit to the local community.

Skills and materials (mud, bamboo, woven cane, palm thatch) are largely locally sourced with some use of recycled elements (nylon thread from car tyres and old oil drums). Composting toilets help minimise water consumption and solar power provides water heating and electricity generation.

The project has won many awards, including:

  • Conde Nast Traveller “Best Small Hotel”, 2012
  • Tourism Tomorrow Community Benefit Award, 2011
  • Sunday Times - “100 Best Hotels in the World”
